Inland Cannon Beach turns away from the surf to find the quiet country behind it. Deep violet firs cluster in the foreground, a still gray inlet curves through the middle, and gold-green hills roll back toward a sky piled high with summer clouds.
It is the coast most people drive past on their way to the sand ... the hidden folds of land where the light goes soft and the trees turn purple in the shade. There is a hush to it, a sense of having found the quiet side. Somewhere you would linger a while.
